<p>My new business cards arrived and, as I was going to a networking event, I popped a bunch in my pocket and headed out.  It wasn&#8217;t until later that night when I was asked, &#8220;Do you know Zoe deLuca?&#8221; (while the person looked straight at my card I had just given them), that the value of a name really sunk in for me.</p>
<p>You see my new business cards have my &#8216;new name&#8217; on them.  When I say new name, I should probably explain&#8230;&#8230;.</p>
<p>After 11 years together Mark and I finally got married last week.  And along with the ceremony (and party) I also &#8216;got&#8217; a new surname.  So Zoe deLuca is morphing into Zoe Wyatt.</p>
<p>So what?  I know lots of people get married each year and take on their Husband&#8217;s surname.  But, when you have spent the last 8 years building a brand online based on your personal name (as I have) then this becomes a major &#8220;issue&#8221;.</p>
<p>If a person standing in front of me with my card, did not automatically make the connection that I was the same Zoe then how is my market, and potential clients, going to do this on the internet?</p>
<p>The reality is that I &#8216;could&#8217; retain deLuca for my professional branding.  In fact I still have, www.zoedeluca.com and my Twitter profile is still @zdeluca but do I really want to have to juggle two names going forward?  One for personal use and one for professional?  What a hassle.</p>
<p>What this has brought up to me is the importance of not just your &#8216;name&#8217; but your &#8216;Branding&#8217; in internet marketing (including social media marketing).  So, what does your name or brand online say about you and your business right now?</p>
<p>Are &#8216;you&#8217; your brand?  Is your business based around your personal name and, if so, is this optimal for you?  You may not be thinking about changing your name any time soon but what if you change your core product or service offerings?</p>
<p>My Social Media services did not even exist 5 years ago and they continue to &#8216;evolve&#8217; (ie change) rapidly.  Imagine if I&#8217;d branded as &#8216;MySpace Specialist&#8217; three years ago, I&#8217;d need to re-brand anyway.</p>
<p>Even if your branding is not based on your personal name, the name you chose to brand on is vitally important in business generally, but in internet &amp; social media marketing especially.  When developing your online brand consider these aspects:</p>
<ul>
<li>Does your brand name accurately reflect your business?</li>
<li>Does your brand instantly identify what you do/offer?<br />
If not, do you need to incorporate a tag line to do this?</li>
<li>Can you secure the .com web address for your brand name?</li>
<li>Is your brand name consistent across all social media sites?</li>
<li>Is your brand already in use in social media accounts and will this cause confusion for your clients?</li>
<li>Have you considered transition of your business? Will you want to sell in the future or pass to a family member?</li>
</ul>
<p>With all of this to consider &#8220;branding&#8221; is a huge decision to make.  In fact, to answer my original question, &#8220;What&#8217;s in a name?&#8221; &#8211; obviously, in the world of internet marketing, a great deal.</p>
<p>My decision has been to establish three clear brands:</p>
<ul>
<li>Social Media ShortCut &#8211; for my Social Media Marketing Training</li>
<li>MarkandZoe &#8211; for our virtual, multiple income stream business together.  With the tagline of<br />
&#8220;Make The World Your Office&#8221; to make it easier to understand what the business is all about, and</li>
<li>Zoe Wyatt &#8211; for personal social media use and interacting with family and friends.</li>
</ul>

<h1>Ok it may be the best Social Media Marketing Training in Australia and New Zealand</h1>
<p>I got carried away because, as Big Kev used to say, I&#8217;m excited!!!</p>

<p>“Australian business executives are returning from the World Economic Forum reassured that the global economy is recovering solidly from the financial crisis but struck by how the social networking revolution will force them to hand more power to both their employees and customers.”<sup>1 </sup></p>
<p>That statement, from ‘The Australian’ newspaper, alone shows just how powerful a sales medium Social Media has become.  The power shift has been significant – now the control is with the consumer rather than the marketer.  “People Power” is now the most effective form of marketing the world over.</p>
<p>In fact that same “People Power” can deliver far more than just great sales outcomes.  One has to look no further than the recent Floods in Australia, Cyclone Yasi and events  in Egypt, to see the unstoppable  force of Social Media.  Twitter and Facebook could not be silenced and the message was delivered even when, in the case of Egypt, the internet was shut down.</p>
<p>Traditional media turned to the public for updates, photos, videos and reports. “People Power” was informing, sharing, helping and alerting the World to events as they happened and, at times warning of events before they occurred.</p>
<p>So if the balance of power is shifting to the consumer, what does a business do to ensure that their products and services are receiving favourable reviews and comments? The answer is as simple as it is complex – talk to your customers via these wonderful new tools.</p>
<p>Ask their advice – what are you doing right and what are you doing wrong?  If you are doing it correctly – do more. If you are doing it all wrong – fix it.  What should you be doing more of?  Ask but ask via the mediums that your customers use to engage on a daily basis. Your customers will love you.</p>
<p>Happy customers are happy to refer you too.  There is no more compelling a recommendation than that of a friend – that is the fuel that drives the Social Media rocket.  And this rocket has long ago passed the moon and is heading for the sun.  More than ever, your business needs to be on board.</p>

<p>I have received notification from Twitter that there are updates occurring over the next few weeks that will change the way Twitter interacts with, and allows access from/to, many applications.</p>
<p>If you are using any of the tools I recommend in my <a title="How To Use Twitter To Grow Your Business - Zoe deLuca" href="http://markandzoe.com/social-media-marketing-for-network-marketers-how-to-use-twitter-to-grow-your-business" target="_blank">Twitter Training Videos</a> (and you should be) then these changes will effect you.</p>
<p>The changes should be relatively simple to adapt to and mainly require you giving applications access to your Twitter accounts or re-authorising these.  I have copied Twitter&#8217;s notification update (below) &#8211; simply read through and click on the links for more information or to update your apps.</p>

<p>FROM TWITTER:</p>
<p>Over the coming weeks, we will be making two important updates that will impact how you interact with Twitter applications. We are sending this notice to all Twitter users to make sure you are aware of these changes.</p>
<p><strong>What are applications?</strong></p>
<p>There are over 250,000 applications built using the Twitter API. To use most applications, you first authorize the application to access your Twitter account, after which you can use it to read and post Tweets, discover new users and more. Applications come in many varieties, including desktop applications like <a href="http://www.tweetdeck.com/" target="_blank">TweetDeck</a>, <a href="http://seesmic.com/" target="_blank">Seesmic</a>, or <a href="http://www.echofon.com/" target="_blank">EchoFon</a>, websites such as <a href="http://tweetmeme.com/" target="_blank">TweetMeme</a>, <a href="http://fflick.com/" target="_blank">fflick</a>, or <a href="http://topsy.com/" target="_blank">Topsy</a>, or mobile applications such as <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/twitter/id333903271" target="_blank">Twitter for iPhone</a>, <a href="http://www.blackberry.com/twitter/" target="_blank">Twitter for Blackberry</a>, or <a href="http://foursquare.com/" target="_blank">Foursquare</a>.</p>
<p><strong>Update 1: New authorization rules for applications</strong></p>
<p>Starting August 31, all applications will be required to use “OAuth” to access your Twitter account.</p>
<p>What&#8217;s OAuth?</p>
<ul>
<li>OAuth is a technology that enables applications to access Twitter on your behalf with your approval without asking you directly for your password.</li>
<li>Desktop and mobile applications may still ask for your password once, but after that request, they are required to use OAuth in order to access your timeline or allow you to tweet.</li>
</ul>
<p>What does this mean for me?</p>
<ul>
<li>Applications are no longer allowed to store your password.</li>
<li>If you change your password, the applications will continue to work.</li>
<li>Some applications you have been using may require you to reauthorize them or may stop functioning at the time of this change.</li>
<li>All applications you have authorized will be listed at <a href="http://twitter.com/settings/connections?utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_content=app_settings&amp;utm_campaign=tco" target="_blank">http://twitter.com/settings/connections</a>.</li>
<li>You can revoke access to any application at any time from the list.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Update 2: <a href="http://t.co/" target="_blank">t.co</a> URL wrapping</strong></p>
<p>In the coming weeks, we will be expanding the roll-out of our link wrapping service <a href="http://t.co/" target="_blank">t.co</a>, which wraps links in Tweets with a new, simplified link. Wrapped links are displayed in a way that is easier to read, with the actual domain and part of the URL showing, so that you know what you are clicking on. When you click on a wrapped link, your request will pass through the Twitter service to check if the destination site is known to contain malware, and we then will forward you on to the destination URL. All of that should happen in an instant.</p>
<p>You will start seeing these links on certain accounts that have opted-in to the service; we expect to roll this out to all users by the end of the year. When this happens, all links shared on Twitter.com or third-party apps will be wrapped with a <a href="http://t.co/" target="_blank">t.co</a> URL.</p>
<p>What does this mean for me?</p>
<ul>
<li>A really long link such as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Delivering-Happiness-Profits-Passion-Purpose/dp/0446563048" target="_blank">http://www.amazon.com/Delivering-Happiness-Profits-Passion-Purpose/dp/0446563048</a> might be wrapped as <a href="http://t.co/DRo0trj" target="_blank">http://t.co/DRo0trj</a> for display on SMS, but it could be displayed to web or application users as <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Delivering-Happiness-Profits-Passion-Purpose/dp/0446563048" target="_blank">amazon.com/Delivering-</a> or as the whole URL or page title.</li>
<li>You will start seeing links in a way that removes the obscurity of shortened links and lets you know where each link will take you.</li>
<li>When you click on these links from Twitter.com or a Twitter application, Twitter will log that click. We hope to use this data to provide better and more relevant content to you over time.</li>
</ul>

<p>All wordpress site owners need to watch this video. Seriously don&#8217;t  wait to learn this the hard  way after a server error and losing  everything (like I did!).</p>
